The Editorial Board of RGNUL Financial and Mercantile Law Review (RFMLR) organised the Colloquium on Goods and Services Tax Law in collaboration with Lakshmikumaran & Sridharan (L&S) Attorneys on February 29, 2020. L&S is one of the most reputed law firms in the country providing services in varied areas of practice. The firm has made huge contributions to the field of taxation law including Goods and Services Tax, Customs, Excise Duty, Service Tax, Value Added Tax and Income Tax. 

 

The Colloquium received an overwhelming response from legal professionals, law students, and academics across the country. It was a one-of-a-kind conference delving into a theme that was yet to become commonplace in the discussions in academic corridors. This unique initiative by RFMLR and L&S turned out to be a huge success and will contribute a great deal to the academic research on GST law through this book. It was successful in achieving its aim of addressing various issues in the implementation of GST law and suggesting possible solutions to the same.

The Colloquium was divided into two sessions. The first session consisted of guest lectures by the experts from L&S. The first lecture was delivered by Mr Mathivanan N., Principal Partner at L&S, who graciously joined us as the Guest of Honour. He is a legal luminary in the arena of taxation law in India. Thereafter, we were joined by our esteemed guests, Mr Narendra Singhvi, Joint Partner at L&S, and Mr. Shubham Vijay, Principal Associate at L&S, for a joint lecture where they enlightened the participants with their views on various provisions of GST law.

 

The attendees of the lectures comprised students from RGNUL and other law universities as well as academics from all over the country. The second leg of the conference consisted of paper presentations by the participants. The Editorial Board of RFMLR had invited abstracts from law students, academics, and professionals on themes revolving around the GST regime in India. The Editorial Board shortlisted a few abstracts for submission of full papers. The authors of the selected entries were invited to attend the Colloquium and given the opportunity to present their research to our panel of experts. The paper presentations were evaluated by the experts from L&S and the faculty members from RGNUL.
 

Among all the papers presented during the Colloquium, the top three with the most engaging presentations were awarded prizes. Mr Anuj Jain and Mr Ashutosh Choudhary (Students, National Law University Odisha) were adjudged as the winners. Ms Dhanshree Sharma (Student, Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Punjab) won the second prize, while Ms. Shrutika Lakhotia and Mr. Rohit Maheshwary (Students, Christ (Deemed to be) University, Bangalore) won the third prize. All the prize winners were offered internships at L&S. They were also awarded books on GST law published by our Knowledge Partner for the event, the Eastern Book Company.
